Roman Polanski, dem selbst 1943 die Flucht aus dem Krakauer Ghetto gelungen war, gelang mit diesem Film „eine fast unfassbar authentische Wiedergabe unseres Alltags im Warschauer Ghetto.“( Marcel Reich-Ranicki) Szpilman ( Adrien Brody) überlebte durch die Hilfe des jüdischen und polnischen Widerstands und in besonderer Weise durch den deutschen Hauptmann Wilm Hosenfeld (Thomas Kretschmann). Ronald Harwood used the memoirs of the pianist Władysław Szpilman as the basis for the screenplay of this feature film. In it, Szpilman describes his life as a Jew from 1939 to 1945, in particular his survival in the Warsaw Ghetto.
