Twelve-year-old Anna is moving from middle school to high school. Things are different here: the children at the new school come from a completely different social background. Anna starts to feel ashamed of her origins and of her deaf mother. During a school ski trip, Anna pretends to be sick — the money saved for the ski course has instead been spent on a sofa bed, which will give her mother the chance to pursue a romantic relationship, and provide Anna herself with a little more privacy. Mara, a classmate, soon becomes an ally when it turns out that she, too, is keeping a secret.
